Acupuncture Basics - Background

Acupuncture is part of traditional Chinese medicine.

It sees that body as being composed of two opposing and inseparable forces, yin and yang. Yin is cold, slow and passive. Yang is hot, excited and active.

Health is achieved by maintaining the body in a balanced state between yin and yang.

Disease is believed to be due to an imbalance of yin and yang. The imbalance causes blockage in the flow of qi or life force energy, along pathways called meridians. There are 12 main meridians and 8 secondary meridians.

Traditional acupunture has 365 acupuncture points on these meridians, one for each day of the year. Modern acupunture has added more acupuncture points.

Stimulating the correct acupuncture points with needles, magnets or pressure can clear the blockage.
